THE JOURNEY<\/p>\n

The breath of sleepers
\nlifts and falls
\nlike a cold white sea,
\ntheir sheets a palimpsest
\nfor the dreams of those
\nwho have uncoiled their bodies,
\nloved and died in these beds
\nbefore them.<\/p>\n

Far off,
\nthe sleepers wash ashore.
\nBeneath nightwinds,
\ntheir haunches shift like dunes,
\nlimbs lose their way like driftwood.
\nFrom their mouths, the howl
\nof great furred animals,
\nsmoke of ancient battle,
\nsongs of longing,
\nscent of frangipani.<\/p>\n

At dawn they rise,
\nbereft of danger,
\nleaving scoops of dark regret
\nin their lovely pillows,
\nsoft as Lorelei, Delilah.
