For Bananafish

By Antje Katcher

For Bananafish

A selection from For Bananafish:

A PERFECT DAY FOR BANANAFISH

No moon to howl at – just a
thin hard slice of sour orange candy in a perfect
balance resting suspended on the edge of day—
This is November and a time for
endings but the maple with its butter bright banana
yellow leaves leaps from the mist like flying fish

From tropic seas. Let us sail south, fish
for the moon among the islands, find a
beach and in the shadow of banana
trees build ourselves a fire, watch a perfect
yellow circle rise while we for
hours laugh til day…

About The Author

Author

Catechism: New and Selected Poems is a posthumous collection from Antje Katcher, poet, photographer, playwright, political activist, and founding editor of Three Mile Harbor Press. Culled from a lifetime of writing in her native Germany and the East End of Long Island, Katcher’s first full-length volume reveals a restive mind equally at home in religion, politics, folklore, and nature, and a skilled aficionado of fixed poetic forms. This is a mature, learned and sophisticated voice which is certain to attract the larger audience it so richly deserves.
